Naturopathic Medicine

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary healthcare that addresses the root cause of illness or disease and promotes health and healing using natural therapies.

Using a range of therapies allows naturopathic doctors to be flexible in designing the best treatment plan possible for each individual patient, which may include:

  • DIETARY RECOMMENDATIONSS
are integral to ensuring that the body has the required nutrients to maintain health and assist healing.

  • TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINEE
includes the use of acupuncture, and Oriental herbs to balance the flow of Qi (energy) throughout the body.

  • NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTATIONN
to build-up deficiencies, encourage healing, eliminate toxins, or address specific health concerns.

  • BOTANICAL MEDICINEE
uses plant substances as teas, tinctures or in capsules, from around the world for their healing effects and nutritional value, as an alternative to drugs.

  • HOMEOPATHYY
uses minute amounts of natural substances to stimulate the self-healing abilities of the body on all levels.

  • LIFESTYLE COUNSELLING
helps patients make informed choices to reach and maintain their optimal health, in response to the physical, emotional, nutritional and environmental factors that affect well-being.

Naturopathic physicians base their practice on six principles founded on medical tradition and scientific evidence.

  1. Let nature heal The primary goal of naturopathic treatment is to address the cause of an illness rather than simply treating or suppressing symptoms. Identify and treat causes. Naturopathic physicians understand that symptoms will only return unless the root illness is addressed. Rather than cover up symptoms, they seek to find and treat the cause of these symptoms.

    First, do no harm:

-Use low-risk procedures and healing compounds, with few or no side effects.
-Customize each diagnosis and treatment plan to fit each patient.

  2. Educate patients.
Naturopathic medicine believes that doctors must be educators. Naturopathic doctors work collaboratively with patients by sharing knowledge and information to create a successful treatment plan. Patients are encouraged to take responsibility for their own health.

  3. Treat the whole person.
In addition to addressing specific complaints or symptoms, Naturopathic doctors look at the ‘whole picture’. The physical, mental, emotional, genetic, environmental and social factors contributing to the health of each individual patient are thoroughly considered.

  4. Prevent illness.
"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" has never been truer. Naturopathic doctors evaluate risk factors, heredity and vulnerability to disease. By getting treatment for greater wellness, we are less likely to need treatment for future illness.
